Surf Futsal Officially Joins Champions Cup Series Western Conference

Surf Futsal is proud to be a part of United Futsal Champions Cup Series 2021-2022 season.
Sacramento, CA - San Diego Surf was founded in 1977 and is the longest standing Surf club on the west coast, servicing multiple states along the coast. Director and Coordinator of Surf Futsal, Will DuBay, wanted Surf to get into the world of futsal to develop a community of futsal through the club, focusing on players, and creating a good environment for them to express themselves. “Futsal in general is beneficial, players must think faster, play faster, and develop skills that transfer to the outdoor game. It is more of an individual game.” Both DuBay and Coach Izzie Lueken want the players to expect consistency on a personal level.
DuBay grew up in the Netherlands where he found his love for soccer and futsal. “Kids would come home from school and go get their ball and play in the street to just have fun.” Playing ever since he can remember, he developed most of his skills from futsal that led to his success on the outdoor pitch. DuBay brings to light the differences between futsal and soccer by saying, “The biggest difference is that skills drastically contrast. The transition has to be quick, the speed of play has to be at a high level, and you have to be on your toes to problem solve. Defending and attacking have different aspects, and you will see improvement in ball control when you go from indoor to outdoor. As a player, you have to think three steps ahead before your first touch, and create deception to get ahead of the opponent.”
Lueken began her soccer career at a young age and instantly found a true love for the game. She went off to play at the Division 1 level, and eventually had the opportunity to play professionally in Spain for a year. “I hope I can use my past experiences as a soccer player to help these players grow and develop both on and off the field. My goal is for them to continue to learn about the game of futsal and have the will to push themselves to be the best players they can be.” Lueken believes that futsal is a key component for players to build confidence with the ball at their feet, which encourages creativity on the field.
It is clear that Surf is dedicated to providing their community with the opportunity to get involved with futsal. “It gives individuals another place to go. They look forward to it, it clears their mind and gets rid of stress, which is how futsal should be,” says DuBay, “most individuals have not played futsal properly under competition, so it gives them a new game to learn and a reason to expand their brain while still keeping it related to soccer .” Lueken is set on futsal being a way that the players around the community can come together. “I think it will provide a way for players to develop and see the game in a different light.”
By joining United Futsal’s Champions Cup Series, Surf Futsal’s individuals are going to be challenged to play against elite clubs, where they will be exposed to good, healthy competition, which is exactly what they want. President of United Futsal, Rob Andrews, contributes his thoughts about Surf joining CCS by adding, “Having a club with the prominence of Surf is a huge addition to our league. I’d like to thank Fritz, Will and the rest of the team for making the commitment to bring the Champions Cup Series offering into this powerful and far-reaching soccer community”
